"World Youth Day"

World Youth Day (WYD) is the largest youth event in the world and was held in Sydney from July 15th through July 20, 2008.

WYD 2008 attracted 223,000 registered pilgrims, including 110,000 from 170 nations making it the largest event ever hosted in Australia. The theme for 2008 was "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1, 8)

On our journey to WYD08 in Sydney we anticipated the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit and found there the grace and light to be the witnesses to Jesus Christ. Now as we journey onwards towards Eternity, filled with the Spirit of Jesus, let us not be afraid of what may lie ahead of us on our race to the finish line, trusting that we have a great cloud of witnesses spurring us on, that we are not alone, and that even in our weakness Christ is renewing the world by His power. Yes, using our feeble but significant efforts He is making all things new. As the Holy Father Pope Benedict said at the Vigil, "To be truly alive is to be transformed from within, open to the energy of God's love. In accepting the power of the Holy Spirit you too can transform your families, communities and nations." Bishop Anthony Fisher, OP – WYD Coordinator

Although the worldwide gathering of youth called World Youth Day only occurs every two or three years, the day itself is celebrated yearly on a diocesan level throughout the world.

WYD 2010

The theme is "Good Teacher, What Must I do to Inherit Eternal Life?"
(Mk 10:17.)

WYD 2011 International

Pope Benedict has announced that WYD 2011 will take place in Madrid, Spain from August 16 through August 21, 2011. The theme will be "Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith" (cf Col 2:7).
